SEND Support

A child is defined as having SEND if he or she has a learning difficulty, which calls for a special educational provision, namely provision different from or additional to that normally available to learners of the same age or, that the child has a disability, which hinders them from making use of educational facilities from those generally provided by schools for children of the same age, within the same area. We aim to identify special educational needs within pupils as early as possible.

Key Skills North East uses a variety of ways to identify pupils with SEND needs, this includes;

  • Liaising with original main schools through effective transition procedures.  For pupils accessing 12 week placements, the home school or academy retain overall responsibility for the SEND support plan supported by Key Skills North East. Concerns relating to SEND needs identified whilst a pupil is attending Key Skills North East will be communicated to the original main school/parents/professionals at the earliest possible convenience.
  • Assessment and screening (based upon formal assessment periods, interim assessments and assessments/screening carried out by the SEND team and other professionals)
  • Individual diagnostic assessments carried out by the Educational Psychologist
  • Staff observation and feedback from teaching and support staff
  • Referrals/ diagnostic assessments by other agencies and parents
  • The process of identification is always carried out in a manner which helps and supports a student to support with any barriers to learning.
